Hello, I’m Kristen

I have always been interested in the stories that shape the way we live—particularly the ones that tell us who we are in relationship to our bodies, one another, and the living world.

Following that curiosity, I studied philosophy and literature, with a focus on archetypal mythology— the stories passed down from body to body, culture to culture, through which we have made meaning of our lives and remembered ourselves within the wider interconnected web of the living world.

My first great teacher outside of books was the garden.

For many years, I worked with flowers, eventually founding Moon Canyon Design, a floral and creative studio in Los Angeles. I built a business by listening to the flowers: following seasonality, gesture, decay, abundance, and the particular intelligence of the materials themselves. What began as a creative practice became an education in relationship. The more closely I worked with the natural world, the less interested I became in treating nature as something beautiful outside of us, and the more interested I became in what happens when we remember ourselves as participants within it.

That inquiry eventually led me from flowers into herbalism, ecopsychology, and the body. Moon Canyon evolved with me, eventually becoming Moon Canyon Healing, an earth-centered apothecary and herbal practice rooted in the relationship between plants, body, and place. I studied ecopsychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute and have spent the past decade immersed in somatic practice and the study of trauma—learning how our experiences, relationships, and inherited stories take shape within the nervous system, and how the body holds both memory and an extraordinary capacity for repair.

Alongside this work, I have continued to make books. In 2020, Rizzoli published Gathering: Setting the Natural Table, my first book, an exploration of flowers, food, seasonality, and the ritual of coming together. I am the co-author and photographer of The Seasonal Herbalist, published by Hardie Grant, which brings together herbal medicine, somatic practice, seasonal living, and an ecological understanding of healing.

These paths have never felt separate to me. Mythology, flowers, herbal medicine, somatics, ecology, ritual, and storytelling are different ways of entering the same wild conversation.

At the center of my work is an understanding that life moves in cycles. The living world is continually teaching us how to grow and release, how to descend and emerge, how to compost what has completed its life cycle and return its nutrients to the soil.

I believe our inner lives ask the same of us.

Much of my work with clients is an exploration of this regenerative wisdom. Together, we listen for the stories that have taken shape inside the body—the inherited myths about worth, productivity, healing, belonging, and what it means to be human. Some stories still nourish us. Others have reached the end of their life cycle and are asking to be composted.

Rather than trying to fix what we find, we make space for the body to move through its own cycles: to grieve what has not yet been grieved, to rest, to gather resources, to recover instinct and desire, and eventually to allow something new to take root.

This is where myth and ecology meet for me. Both remind us that transformation rarely happens in a straight line. There are seasons of descent and seasons of emergence, times for tending what is growing and times for returning what is finished to the dark.

My work today lives at this meeting place. Through writing, teaching, one-to-one work, gatherings, and seasonal practice, I create spaces for people to listen more closely to the intelligence of their bodies and to the living world around them.

I think of this as a practice of remembering—returning to an animistic understanding that our bodies are ecological bodies, that healing happens in relationship, and that we belong to a world that is alive.
